This week in Entertainment: December 1, 2112
"All the fun that fits, and then some!"
By Your Intrepid Entertainment Sleuth, Grebe Retro

Hello Vid Fans!

This is an auspicious time of year for many reasons. For one, it's
the official start of the Solstice/Hanukkah/Eid/Christmas/Kwanzaa
season, or SHECK, as some like to call it. It's also the anniversary
of a Very Important Event, but we'll talk more about that in a
minute.

First, let's talk about original work.

OK, had you going, didn't I? There's no such thing any more. Most
of us folks in the entertainment world would give up our vid
privileges for at least a season to see something truly original.
But that would be self-defeating, wouldn't it?

Anyway, 90% of you don't know or care what original is, and wouldn't
watch a vid if the title didn't have IV or XIII at the end (and why
are we still using Roman numerals? That's so last century!). All
hail the never-ending stream of remakes, sequels, and continuing
stories!

OK, </end rant>. I'm just doing my bit. You'd worry if you
didn't see me complaining about something, wouldn't you? You
might think I'd been replaced by one of those SS's that your
mom used to scare you with. I can't disappoint my audience!

At any rate, we have the usual holiday fare being served up.
There's at least one remake of a beloved holiday story for every
taste, and reissues of the classics. You know all of them, and
criticizing any one of them is sure to offend one group or another,
so I'll leave it to you to decide for yourself.

Besides, I know what you really want me to talk about. The Remake
of All Remakes, at least for the next twenty years or so. It seems
that every generation wants the story re-made for their own time, and
especially this year, to mark the 100th anniversary of the event that
made it possible for me to be here today to tell you all about it.

Yes folks, it's the Mulder and Scully Saga, re-imagined for a New
Age, coming to a vid screen near you! And for the first time, it
won't just be in 3-D, but in Holo-Vid.

Yes, I know that the older flix have been re-mastered, but they've
never been as good as the flix that have actually been made with the
proper equipment. What other reason would there be to go see the
same old story that we, our parents, grand-parents, and great-grands,
grew up on?

And as promised, I have, here on this site, the first exclusive
holo. I know that the identity of the actors has been kept a
secret -- after all, there's got to be *some* mystery kept for
a story that everyone grew up with and knows better than their
own life history -- or at least, think they do. So click on
the little "x" icon to get the holo.

I have it running on my desk right now -- you can, too, if you have
the Holo-tastic (TM) program installed. I'm sure within minutes of
this release, the holo-ficcers will have created their own manips of
Our Heroes doing any number of things that don't bear thinking about.
As you watch this, there are new flix appearing on YouHolo, or the
unauthorized holo-fic sites.

But I digress. I know what you really want to know. How does this
compare to your favorite version? How much does it venture off the
track of Known into the Unknown, Speculative, Non-Official History?

In a word, it's fab-u-lous. You can see from the holo (don't forget
to sign up for Holo-tastic (TM) so you can see it too) that much care
was taken to find -- or create, if the rumors are true -- actors who
look strongly like Mulder and Scully. Although the sound recordings
we have from back in the day are scarce and primitive, they even
sound like them.

As far as the story line goes, everyone knows what happens and how
it ends up. The fun is in reliving all the well-known moments: the
Reunion with their son. The discovery of the anti-virus. The coming
together of all the warring peoples of the Earth to conquer the Gray
Menace.

Okay, that's actually from another, fictional movie. But you get
the idea.

As to what other aspects of Our Heroes' lives this one covers, I've
been threatened by the makers Not To Reveal Anything. For some
reason, that's a question everyone wants answered: Do They or Don't
They? You know what I'm talking about. Other than one X-rated,
bootleg indy-vid that somehow made it into the MUFON Film Festival
about fifty years ago, no one has ever done more than hint. Believe
me, I've seen them all, and I know. I do not want to get into
another discussion of the whys and the wherefores -- remember how
ugly it got the last time we did that? What I'm interested in is
Entertainment -- and yes, that's with a capital E, for those of you
who are watching rather than reading the text crawl -- and for those
of you who don't know a capital from a column.

Does it seem true to the legend that Mulder and Scully have become?
As time goes on, it's harder and harder to know the real story. This
part of history has become larger than life for most people, though
there will always be invasion-deniers among us, mostly those who
weren't alive during those dark times.

Descendants, adherents, and hangers on -- anyone who has the
slightest claim to being related to, or knowing someone, or being
related to someone who knew someone who was there when the Gray
Menace was quashed for all time -- no one can tell you *exactly* what
happened. Even people who were there had widely different
recollections of events, and the two who were in the thick of it were
the least likely to talk about it. Someone once said (or maybe I saw
it in a vid), "when legend becomes fact, print the legend!" Well,
that's what this is all about: keeping the legend alive.

There are those who say that Mulder and Scully were all about the
truth, and I am not about to tell you different. But they've passed
into legend now, and those who are left to tell their story will put
their own spin on it, regardless. It's up to you, dear viewers, to
decide for yourselves what to believe.

Want to know how this one compares to the others? As part of the
official observance of the 100th anniversary, there will be marathon
showings of all the previous flix in local revival houses -- if you
can stand leaving the comfort of your own viddy room and sharing
space with a crowd of strangers. My grandmother used to say that
going out to a "movie" was an important shared experience. In my
opinion, shared experiences *in public* are over-rated.

Out of respect for the role corn and corn products played in the
Enemy's deadly plot, no popcorn will be served at the public
showings. However, I'm told there will be sunflower seeds.

Well, that wraps up another week of viddy news for all of youse!
Have fun at whatever you celebrate -- and don't forget to sign up for
Holo-tastic (TM)!

Join me again next week when we celebrate the 132nd anniversary of
"Caddyshack," and its enduring popularity.
